Speck Presidio MagSafe iPhone Case? Really? Do we need iPhone 12 cases that are designed for MagSafe? Tech expert Dave Taylor checks out the case by doing what you'd want to do: Testing charge speed versus a non-MagSafe case and versus having an iPhone 12 on a MagSafe charger without a case at all. The results are pretty darn interesting...

A MagSafe iPhone case? Does that even matter? Let's check it out
0:12
Dave Taylor here and I'm checking out this. This is the Spec Presidio MagSafe case
0:18
And if you don't know what MagSafe is, well, on your iPhone 12 line, it actually has magnets on the back
0:25
so that your wireless charger and you need a magsafe charger can actually connect to the optimal spot and charge as fast as possible
0:34
It's kind of fun because when you have one, it is literally a magnetic connection and it stays in the right place
0:42
And in fact, let me do that again so you can see there's even a special display on the phone screen
0:48
that shows you that you're actually doing that magsafe charge. Pretty cool, right
0:54
Turns out it's a faster charge and that's a good thing. Actually, I guess I'll just let it charge while we're sitting here
1:01
So let me tell you a little bit about the case. And then what I thought I would do is I said
1:06
hmm, does it really matter if it's a MagSafe case or not
1:10
So I charged my phone with a non-mag safe case on a wireless charger
1:16
I charged it without any case on the wireless charger. And then I charged it with the Spec Presidio MagSafe case
1:23
How do I know it's MagSafe? That's what this is. This is the magnetic system that makes sure that the battery, I mean the charger and everything all lines up correctly
1:34
So let me tell you just a tiny thing about this It is microband antimicrobial 13 foot drop tested It a pretty snug fit with my phone and it has a stay clear guarantee In the old age you get one of these clear cases and after a couple of months it started to get yellow
1:51
and after 10 or 12 months, it started to look a little bit antique, not what people wanted
1:56
So spec guarantees that won't happen. That is a cool thing. All right, so here's what I did
2:02
I started out with this. This is a really great classic otterbox case
2:07
I put my iPhone 12 Pro in the case. I'll do that right now
2:12
And let me just tell you a little bit about the charging system I'm using
2:16
I am using a scosh 20-watt mini-cube charging wall plug. And then I have the SIN-Dox MagSafe charger
2:27
So this is the same thing that Apple sells, just a lot cheaper. So if I put my phone on this, there's no magnet part or there's just the tiniest bit
2:36
but it charges. Right, so that's case one. Case number two is when I actually just pull it out completely
2:45
and then I just put the phone directly on the charger, and that actually is a lot faster
2:51
And then the third situation I tried was to put my phone in the spec case
2:57
and this one took a little bit of getting it to fit. It's a pretty snug fit, which I actually like with cases
3:05
because it means that it's not going to fall out. It has a nice bezel on it and everything
3:09
So, what are the numbers? Well, in this non-mag safe case on this charger
3:17
it had an embarrassingly low 20% an hour charge. That just not much at all By contrast when it wasn in any case my phone directly on the charger got a 52 charge in one hour That is quite respectable for wireless charging right Nothing to plug in You just put it on top It automatically positions itself and it charges up
3:41
Then, third situation is our Presidio case with the MagSafe, almost the classic mail symbol
3:49
And put that on. It should show. the wireless charging. I guess it doesn't because it's not it's unlocked but that got me a 44% charge
3:59
So having it in this case more than doubles the charge of having it in this original case
4:06
which is great. It's not quite as good as having it with no case at all, but 44% in an hour, I can live with that
4:14
That's a pretty decent charge. So the conclusion is that the case does make a difference. Having it MagSafe does make a difference
4:22
difference that does make it charge over twice as fast as having your phone in a non-mag-safe
4:29
case on a mag-safe capable charger. So that should be something pretty intriguing to you
4:36
because I have to say, when you buy one of these really expensive phones, you want to keep it in a
4:41
case. You want to keep it protected. This is one heck of a big investment for me to just leave it
4:46
and just trust that if it falls off a table onto a concrete floor or something, that it's going to
4:52
survive. It's not. I can tell you because I watch my kids break phones all the time
4:57
This is a 13-foot drop tested, very attractive, rugged, protected case, and it'll let me do that
5:05
wireless charging and it even actually does the whole magnet thing and everything Well done spec I think a lot of companies are coming out with these mag save cases and now you know why that actually makes a difference
5:17
So we need to talk about the price. But before we get to the price, I'm going to ask if you can subscribe to my channel
5:23
a click or a tap on that subscribe button, and we're connected. Also, give me some feedback
5:28
I ran these different tests. What else do you think I should have tested? I'm not sure what else I could have tested
5:33
I guess I could throw this off of a like second story, building and see what happens, but I'm not a big fan of testing drop tests because of what happens
5:42
if it doesn't survive, right? It's my phone. I had to pay for this thing. Thumbs up, whatever. Give me
5:48
some more feedback. Always appreciated. Great. Now, this is the spec Presidio MagSafe case, and it's
5:57
4995, but when I checked, they had a 25% discount for signing up for their mailing list, and they had a 30% discount
6:05
running for Father's Day. So that means that if I went and bought it today
6:10
I would pay $3496 for this case at speckproducts.com. That is a good price for a really nice, strong, capable
6:21
tough, rugged case that also is MagSafe compatible. Definitely worth checking out
6:28
And with that, I'm going to let my phone charge, and I'll hope to catch you in my next video
